Communicative Competence of College English Language Teachers: Using Results as Basis For An Action Plan

This study determined the communicative competence of college English language teachers Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College (NIPSC) in 5th District through a researcher-developed instrument which had undergone validity and reliability testing. Utilizing mixed method approach with forty-five (45) who were chosen complete enumeration, result showed that respondents’ level areas grammatical, sociolinguistic, strategic discourse was “very good”, while extent their exposure “sometimes” for 95.56% “always” only 4. 44%. There no significant relationship between number years teaching, written proficiency, relevant seminars trainings attended all competence. Among four competence, grammatical sociolinguistic oral proficiency highest educational attainment. exposure. difference respondents when they grouped according to campus. The following factors perceived contribute competence: practice inside outside classroom, mainstream media, experience as teachers, inherent intelligence, or attended, be influenced by time, attitude preference teacher, environment, teaching load, co-workers students. Based on an action plan proposed improve efficiency, performance at College.
